Saving in Prompt Studio
This guide is for subscribers signed in at /prompt/ on desktop or tablet (768px wide and up). Saving, presets, User ORIGINAL chips, and bulk backup live in the SETTINGS panel. On phone (under 768px) the simplified layout has no SETTINGS column—build and copy on mobile, then use a wider screen for saves and backup. See Your first session for the mobile vs desktop split.
Subscription sign-in unlocks the app. It does not sync your prompts to TRANEXION servers.
Block 1 — Two places to save (different jobs)
Prompt Studio does not use one “Save” button. You choose between two separate areas of the UI—each does a different job. Bulk backup (Block 6) is a third topic; it is not shown here.
| Method | Where in the app | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| PROMPT Download / Upload | Prompt panel toolbar — DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD | One JSON file for the current canvas (chip lines, selections, colors). No preset list slot. No thumbnails in the file. |
| Presets (Save in Browser) | SETTINGS footer — PRESETS | Up to 100 named saves in this browser, each with the full canvas snapshot. Optional thumbnail per preset in the list. |
Think of Download/Upload as “email this one prompt file to yourself.” Think of presets as “my library on this machine.”
Place 1 — Prompt panel (DOWNLOAD / UPLOAD)
Switch to Prompt mode. Look at the toolbar above the prompt output (same row as the character counter and ALL COPY). The export and import icons are DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD—they move a single canvas snapshot as a JSON file. They do not open your preset library.
Where to look: Prompt panel header → DOWNLOAD / UPLOAD.
Place 2 — SETTINGS → PRESETS (Save in Browser)
On desktop or tablet (768px and up), open the SETTINGS column. Scroll to the footer section PRESETS. Save in Browser adds a named card to your local list (up to 100). This is separate from the Prompt toolbar—same canvas data can be saved both ways, but the UI and the use case differ.
Where to look: SETTINGS column → footer → PRESETS → Save in Browser.
Block 2 — Browser-only storage and privacy
Prompt Studio is designed so your creative work stays on your device:
- No cloud library — presets and User ORIGINAL chips are not copied to TRANEXION servers and do not sync across phones, tablets, or computers automatically.
- localStorage — preset metadata, User ORIGINAL chip text, and small settings (for example preset project name).
- IndexedDB — thumbnail images for presets and User ORIGINAL chips (small files only; see Block 5).
If you clear site data for tranexion.com in the browser, or use a private window without export, local saves can be lost. Keep a Bulk Export file when you care about long-term backup.
Block 3 — PROMPT Download and Upload
Download
- Build the prompt you want in the Prompt panel.
- Click DOWNLOAD (export icon in the prompt toolbar).
- The browser saves a
.jsonfile. The name often reflects your SUBJECT summary (nuance, region, category) or a timestamp if those are not set.
The file contains the snapshot of your work (same kind of data as inside a preset) but hasImage: false — no preset thumbnail.
Upload
- Click UPLOAD and choose a single-prompt JSON (from Download or a compatible export).
- Confirm when asked — upload replaces the current canvas with the file contents.
Do not use Upload for a Bulk Export backup pack. The app will reject it and tell you to use Bulk Import under PRESETS instead.
Upload does not add an entry to your preset list by itself. To keep the result as a preset, use Save in Browser after upload.
For where these buttons live in the layout, see Block 1 — Place 1 (Prompt panel).
Block 4 — Presets (Save in Browser)
Where and how
- Open SETTINGS (desktop/tablet).
- Scroll to PRESETS in the footer.
- Optionally set Preset project name — a label stored only in this browser; it helps suggest names when you save (for example prepending a client or project name).
- Click Save in Browser.
- Enter a preset name and confirm.
Saved presets appear as cards with an optional thumbnail and name. Click a card to restore that snapshot to the canvas. Use × on a card to delete one preset.
Limit: 100 presets (product spec)
- The counter shows
used / 100(for example12/100). - 100 is the product maximum per browser profile, not a limit that changes by device model.
- If you already have 100 presets and save again, the app asks for confirmation, then removes the oldest preset to make room (including its thumbnail in IndexedDB when present).
- If the browser runs out of storage quota, save may fail; the app may suggest Bulk Export first. That is a browser storage issue, separate from the 100 count cap.
Preset thumbnails (optional)
After saving, you can tap IMG on a preset card to pick a local image file. The app stores a small square thumbnail (~120px) in IndexedDB for the list view. It does not upload that image to TRANEXION or Cloudflare.
For where presets live in the layout, see Block 1 — Place 2 (SETTINGS → PRESETS).
Block 5 — User ORIGINAL chips and thumbnails
In many SETTINGS sections you can create User ORIGINAL chips: your own name + English prompt line (and optional image) alongside the catalog.
- Chip data (name, body, section) — localStorage on this device.
- Thumbnail — if you attach an image, only a ~120px square thumb is kept in IndexedDB on this device. Full-resolution originals are not retained in the app after processing.
- No server upload — ORIGINAL thumbnails are not sent to TRANEXION’s image CDN (unlike built-in Prompt Studio catalog thumbs).
There is no fixed “100” cap on how many User ORIGINAL chips you can create; practical limits come from browser storage.
Removing ORIGINAL chips: delete each chip individually in the SETTINGS section where you created it. Bulk Clear does not remove User ORIGINAL setup.
Block 6 — Bulk Export, Bulk Import, and Bulk Clear
These controls sit under PRESETS in SETTINGS (same footer row as Save in Browser).
Bulk Export
- Exports one JSON file (name like
prompt-studio-presets-YYYY-MM-DD.json). - Includes:
- All User Presets (full snapshots),
- Preset thumbnails (embedded as data in the file when present),
- User ORIGINAL chip list,
- User ORIGINAL thumbnails when present.
- Use this for backup, moving to a new computer, or before you clear browser data.
Export is disabled when you have no presets and no User ORIGINAL chips to export.
Bulk Import
- Choose a JSON file from a previous Bulk Export.
- Replaces all presets in this browser with the pack contents.
- If the pack includes User ORIGINAL data, it replaces User ORIGINAL setup in this browser as well (the app warns when ORIGINAL data would be cleared or overwritten).
- If the file has more than 100 presets, only the newest 100 are kept (same product cap as normal saving).
This is the right path for Bulk Export files — not PROMPT Upload.
Bulk Clear
- Deletes all User Presets in this browser (and their IndexedDB thumbnails).
- Does not change User ORIGINAL setup. Remove ORIGINAL chips one by one if you need to clean those up.
Block 7 — Quick decision guide
| Goal | Action |
|---|---|
| Share or archive one in-progress prompt | PROMPT Download → move file → PROMPT Upload on another session |
| Keep many named versions on this PC | Save in Browser (presets, max 100) |
| Backup everything local (presets + ORIGINAL + thumbs) | Bulk Export → store file safely → Bulk Import on another browser |
| Wipe preset list only | Bulk Clear (ORIGINAL stays unless you delete chips yourself) |
| Work on phone only | Build and ALL COPY; use desktop/tablet for saves above |
