Your First Session in Prompt Studio — Select, Chips, and Copy

Your First Session in Prompt Studio — Select, Chips, and Copy

Your first session in Prompt Studio

This guide is for subscribers who are signed in at /prompt/ and want a first working prompt in about 90 seconds. It does not cover checkout, sign-in links, or billing—see First access after checkout and Sign in again.

Saving presets, JSON export, and backup workflows are in Saving in Prompt Studio. Here we only build and copy a prompt.

Block 1 — A 90-second first prompt

1. Open /prompt/ and confirm you see the workspace (not the sign-in gate).

2. Tap Select in the header. The chip lane fills the view so you can browse categories without the prompt panel in the way.

Prompt Studio Select mode with the chip lane filling the workspace and Select highlighted in the header

3. Click ▶ on a section heading to expand it (▼ when open). Thumbnail chips appear in a grid.

4. Tap Prompt in the header. Click three or four chips you recognize (for example a medium, an area, and a nuance). Each click adds one or more lines to your prompt (some groups add a short label line plus the chip text). Your lines appear in the output area (read-only text assembled from chips).

5. Click 📋 ALL COPY. The full prompt is copied to your clipboard as plain text, one chip line per row. Paste into Midjourney (or another image model you use). Adjust in Midjourney as you normally would.

That is the core loop: open a section (▶ / ▼) → pick thumbnail chips → refine the assembled prompt → ALL COPY → paste into Midjourney.

Block 2 — Chip lane basics

Sections (▶ / ▼)

MEDIUM, AREA, NUANCE, REGION, ENVIRONMENT, and similar blocks use an accordion. Click the heading (or ▶ / ▼) to show thumbnail chips; when collapsed, the lane stays easy to scan.

Chips → lines

Catalog thumbnails are toggles:

  • First click — adds that chip’s line(s) to the Chip lane. In multi-select groups, detail lines follow your click (selection) order, not a fixed catalog sort. New chips usually append after rows already in the lane. Hover the Chip lane and click ▶ between rows to insert after that point instead; click the same ▶ again to return to end-of-lane append. If you reorder rows in the lane, that order is kept until you remove chips or use CLEAR/RESET.
  • Second click on the same chip — removes the lines tied to that chip.

One click is not always one line. Some groups add a short label row plus the chip’s English prompt line (two rows from one click).

Remove lines: click the same thumbnail again, or ✕ on the right of any row in the Chip lane (labels and free-insert rows included). There is no delete control on catalog thumbnails.

Perimeter walls (multi-select, one heading)

Under NUANCE or REGION, Perimeter walls is multi-select: one heading line (Perimeter walls:) and one English line per selected chip—no repeated headings in the export. Turn chips on in any order; the lane lists each wall line in that order.

If you turn off every chip, the detail lines disappear but the title row may remain (Chip lane v4). It is a section anchor for + FREE INSERT. Click ✕ on that title row to remove it.

Character count

Counter in the header or floating chrome (for example 42 / 1500):

RangeMeaning
Under ~1024 charactersNormal length for Midjourney v8-style workflows.
From 1024 charactersOften treated as a long prompt; the UI may show a Long Prompt hint. Prefer shorter, denser lines—see Midjourney Guide articles.
1500 charactersHard cap in Prompt Studio (LIMIT!). Remove lines before adding more.

Use compressed English (commas, semicolons, short phrases)—not paragraphs.

Video walkthrough: header character counter, Long Prompt hint near 1024 characters, and the 1500 character hard cap.

CLEAR vs RESET

In Prompt mode, 🧹 CLEAR and 🧹 RESET empty the lane and clear catalog selections. They are not Bulk Clear under SETTINGS → PRESETS (saved preset names only).

CLEARRESET

CLEAR — blank prompt, same open sections. RESET — full tidy reset (scrolls toward the top of the Chip lane). Both clear chip selections; CLEAR only keeps which panels and accordions were open. Desktop Select / Prompt layout is unchanged.

Video walkthrough: CLEAR keeps open panels and reference image; RESET collapses sections, clears reference, and closes SETTINGS drawers.

Elsewhere

Block 3 — Desktop vs mobile (simplified light version)

Desktop and tablet (768px wide and up) — full workspace

  • Select — chip lane gets maximum space; prompt dock is minimized.
  • Prompt — Prompt mode shows the split workspace: chip catalog (upper left), SETTINGS (lower left), and the assembled Prompt column (right).
  • Settings — In Prompt mode, use the top-right Select · Prompt control and choose Prompt to show the prompt dock. The SETTINGS column (left side of the dock) holds the Dictionary row (COLOR PALETTE, HEX, NAMED COLOR, MARBLE, STONE, METAL, WOOD, PATTERN, FORM, DETAIL, MJ EDIT), TEMPLATE / PRESETS, themes, Guide, and Sign out on desktop. Tap a Dictionary button to open its drawer—not a separate gear icon.
  • Expand / Hide SETTINGS — on wide layouts you can hide the settings column to focus on chips + prompt, or expand settings for dictionary work.

This is the full Prompt Studio experience.

Video walkthrough: desktop and tablet layout—Select vs Prompt, chip catalog, SETTINGS column, and the assembled prompt panel.

Phone (under 768px) — simplified light version

On small screens Prompt Studio is intentionally a light, simplified version of the same engine:

  • No SETTINGS column — dictionary drawers, template lists, and desktop-only settings are not shown on narrow viewports. Plan color and material edits on desktop or tablet when you need them.
  • Prompt mode — prompt output full screen (ALL COPY, character counter, mobile header chrome).
  • Select mode — chip lane full screen; use Select · Prompt in the floating control to switch.
  • Account and theme — use the mobile menu (bottom-right) for Laboratory / Atelier / Sanctuary theme and Sign out, not the full Settings panel.

You can still build and copy strong prompts on phone; you trade depth of SETTINGS for speed and screen space.

Video walkthrough: phone layout—Select vs Prompt full screen, mobile menu for theme and sign out, and ALL COPY without the SETTINGS column.

Block 4 — SETTINGS and header chrome (desktop)

When you are in Prompt mode on desktop or tablet, the SETTINGS column is visible:

AreaRole
COLOR PALETTEScene-wide color direction for the exterior or interior in your prompt—one atmospheric palette for the whole look, not per-material or per-component color picks.
HEX / NAMED COLOR / MARBLE / STONE / METAL / WOODMaterial and color chips—often applied at line start when inserted from drawers.
PATTERN / FORM / DETAILFinishes and details—typically inline additions on a line.
MJ EDITShort Midjourney-oriented edit phrases where the catalog provides them.

Video walkthrough: SETTINGS Dictionary buttons and how each Area maps to its Role in the prompt.

Themes (visual comfort only):

  • Laboratory — dark, cool studio lighting.
  • Atelier — light ivory workspace.
  • Sanctuary — light ivory with burgundy accents.

Ring (when shown) is an optional accent ring around the prompt focus area—purely visual.

Video walkthrough: SETTINGS Themes — Laboratory, Atelier, and Sanctuary (visual comfort only; prompt text unchanged).
