NUANCE and REGION — Why the Chip Thumbnails Change

NUANCE and REGION — Why the Chip Thumbnails Change

NUANCE and REGION — why the chip thumbnails change

This guide is for signed-in subscribers at /prompt/ who already know the first-session loop (Select → expand → chips → ALL COPY). Here we explain NUANCE and REGION as design-direction controls for the AREA you already chose—how they shape the opening line, why 1:1 chip grids under Perimeter Wall and the other mixed categories swap, and how to mix materials from more than one nuance or region without losing earlier picks.

In Select, expand SUBJECT to set AREA, NUANCE, and REGION. Mixed categories such as Perimeter Wall sit below those axes.

Start with AREA

In Select mode you first commit to an AREA—EXTERIOR, GARDEN, ENTRANCE HALL, and the other scene types in the left column. That choice answers what you are describing (a villa facade, a garden, a kitchen, and so on).

NUANCE and REGION come next. They do not replace AREA; they steer the design direction for that scene:

  • NUANCE — attitude and material language (for example MODERN, MINIMAL, RUSTIC, WABI-SABI).
  • REGION — geographic and climatic DNA (for example JAPANESE, NORDIC, MEDITERRANEAN, DESERT PLATEAU).

Each axis is single-choice (one active value per field, or None). The small square on an axis chip is only the coordinate thumbnail for that value; Midjourney still needs subject chips (or free insert) to build detailed lines.

EXTERIOR also has area-specific blocks (POV, paving, planting at the site scale) in a separate part of Select. This guide focuses on NUANCE / REGION and the mixed SUBJECT catalog (Perimeter Wall onward), not those exterior-detail groups.

How NUANCE and REGION shape the opening line

Prompt Studio inserts nuance and region words into the AREA base line—the short English line that anchors the category (EXTERIOR uses A villa as the base).

The table below shows EXTERIOR with the current NUANCE and REGION selection. Changing an axis updates this line; it does not rewrite subject lines you already added elsewhere.

NoneNoneA villa
MODERNNoneA modern villa
MODERNJAPANESEA modern japanese villa
WABI-SABINORDICA japandi villa (fused pair—see note below)
ARTISTICNORDICA artistic nordic villa

Other AREA values use the same rule on their own base (for example A KITCHEN, A GARDEN, A BATHROOM VANITY interior). Only one opening line reflects the axis chips right now.

Creative pairs: Some NUANCE × REGION combinations are deliberate surprises—WABI-SABI with NORDIC resolves to japandi in the opening line. Most other pairs join the usual lowercase nuance and region words in order (MODERN before JAPANESE, and so on).

Mix vs opening line: You can keep a MODERN roof line and a RUSTIC wall line in the mixed SUBJECT panel at the same time (see below). That mix appears in subject rows; it does not automatically become A modern rustic villa in the opening line unless that is what your current axis selection produces.

Perimeter Wall and the mixed SUBJECT catalog

Below the NUANCE and REGION blocks, Select shows mixed SUBJECT sections in a fixed order of fifteen categories. The first heading is Perimeter Wall; the rest follow the same sequence (roof, facade, planting, and similar subject groups—titles match what you see in the app).

Both axes on None — User Original only

If NUANCE and REGION are both None, every mixed category—including Perimeter Wall—shows User Original thumbnails only. You can still add or insert your own 1:1 images; there is no DNA catalog until you pick at least one axis. The gray hint under the block states that this is User Original only.

Either axis selected — DNA-aligned 1:1 chips

As soon as you choose NUANCE or REGION (or both), the mixed panel offers catalog chips aligned with that DNA. Expand a category with ▶, click thumbnails to add lines (multi-select: click again to remove).

What you see depends on which value is active on the axis you are browsing:

  • With MINIMAL selected on NUANCE, wall and finish grids lean toward minimal language (for example exposed concrete and similar choices in the catalog).
  • With MEDITERRANEAN selected on REGION, roof and material grids lean toward that region (for example pitched roof with terracotta-colored tiles where the catalog defines them).

Many chips are tagged to more than one NUANCE or REGION in the catalog. The same finish can appear when you explore different axis values; switching the axis changes which candidates dominate each category grid, not a single exclusive list.

When both NUANCE and REGION are set, a category can show nuance-driven and region-driven chips together where the catalog defines both. Read the gray hint under the heading: selections from other NUANCE and REGION values can remain in the prompt after you change the axis (cumulative multi-select).

Mix designs across NUANCE and REGION

Each NUANCE and REGION thumbnail may show a number in the corner: how many mixed-panel catalog chips for that axis value are in your prompt right now.

You cannot select MODERN and RUSTIC on the NUANCE row at the same time—only one nuance value is active for browsing. You can still build a mixed design:

  1. Select MODERN on NUANCE. Open Roof (or another category) and add the modern roof chip you want.
  2. Switch NUANCE to RUSTIC. The axis thumbnail and the visible catalog change; your existing prompt lines stay.
  3. Open Perimeter Wall or Facade and add a rustic wall or finish chip.
  4. Switch back to MODERN anytime to add more modern-leaning chips from those categories.

The same pattern works on REGION (for example NORDIC planting, then MEDITERRANEAN roof details) and when both axes contribute chips in one category. Midjourney receives the assembled English lines in the prompt panel, not the thumbnails.
